Alfred was buried on January 5, 1945 at Roselawn Cemetery, St. Paul, MN.

SOURCE: 1999 - Daniel Evjen, grandson of Thelka Augusta Hellerstedt Edwall - His aunt Kyia died at age 104. Thelka, whowas Alfred's daughter, reported that the town of Edwall, located in Eastern Washington state, is named after Alfred. According to the story, Alfred worked as a railroad supervisor at the town's location and when new employees needed assignment from Spokane, Washington, they would be told to go out and see Edwall. My grandmother also told me that a lake in Minnesota is named Edwall after Alfred, but I haven't found any such lake.

OCCUPATION: He first worked as a shoemaker when he first emigrated from Sweden. He worked for the Great Northern Railwayfor 51 years. He worked 8 years on the Panama Canal.

Dear Isabel and all of you,

I want to send you a few lines tonight, it will go on the Steamer tomorrow. I wish I could be home with you tonight, as I am sure you are lonely. I have not got any letter from mama, so I don't know if she left for Panama today. If she did you will be lonely for a few days, but don't worry as everything will go alright. I am glad mama did make up her mind tocome, it will do her a pile of good to get a little rest and now you and all of you children want to be good so ma don'thave to hear any bad news from you. Don't go away from home with anyone, if anyone want to take you out, don't go. I write you this because you are now old enough to understand me and you do well if you remember. There are all kinds of people in this world of ours and the class that come in automobiles and fine clothes, them are so a...... the low down rascals. So once more, don't go out away from home.

Dear Children:

It is only a day or two since I wrote you, but will write again. I get a little bit homesick once in a while, whenever Iget to thinking of you, of my little baby Sylvia, and all of you little and big. Well, I soon start for home again, as Iwill leave the 15th of this month and get to Hasty about the 25th. I have seen all of Canal Zone and a great deal of oldPanamanians are about to have Election and here is an awfull nosie going on about it. Tomorrow evening there will be abig ........ of Colonel Gothels, at the Y.C.C. hotel here. Three hundred and fifty people will be sitt to table all atonesitting, so you must know it is a big Diningroom. We are invited but I don't think I will go, as I have no dress for suchan ocasion .... and Jed might go. The Marine band will play during the evening. We have been invited out so much thatI had to cut it, it keeps me tired and I want.

7-9-1999 - The following information is from a lady in Sweden that does research. She got the information from assorted records on CD's.

Hello Jane!

I searched for the Hellerstedt family in the Swedish passenger lists on CD Emigration. This is what I found:

s.Johan, 19 years old

d.Lydia, 10 years old
s.Frans, 8 years old
d.Jenny, 7 years old

d.Elsa, 3 years old

This family left for America from the port of Göteborg on April 9, 1886. They are listed as comming from Godegård parish, Östergötland county (sometimes called Linköping county) and they had a ticket for Minneapolis. Source code: 28:296:2437.

I also searched the database I have with emigrants from several Swedish parishes. It is based on the Swedish household records (husförhörslängder). I found the family there too:

The following is information received by me from the Police Chamber records in Goteborg Sweden regarding when Johan August Hellerstedt and his family immigrated from Goteborg Sweden to Hull England. They probably took a train to Liverpool England and boarded another ship to America.

According to the passenger lists in the Police Chamber of Göteborg vol. EIX:28:296:2437, the ship was "Rollo", destinated for
Hull, England. The shipping agent was John Odell.

The ROLLO (1) was built 1870 by C&W Earle in Hull, for the Wilson Line. Launched on 21.2.1870. She was a 1,437 gross tonship, length 260.4 feet
x beam 32.3 feet. Rigging: iron construction single screw steam Schooner, 2 decks, 4 bulkheads and 1 partial bulkhead. She had one funnel, two masts. Propulsion: compound engine with 2 cylinders of 38 & 76 in. diameter respectively, stroke 36 inches, 300 horsepower; new boilers in 1879; engine built by C. & W. giving a speed of 11.5 knots.

As built, there was accommodation for 50-1st, 28-2nd and 498-steerage class passengers. She was lengthened in 1879 and became 274.7 feet long and 32.3 foot beam, holds 19 feet deep, poop 172 feet long and forecastle 29 feet long. New tonnage was 1,613 gross tons, 1,217 under deck and 1,057 net. Re-engined in 1897, she was sold in September 1909 to shipbreakers and scrapped at Einswarden.
